1
Q
how do ‘dividing cells’ cause ageing?
A
telomeres get shorter after each cell division – limiting the amount of division that can occur
2
Q
how do ‘non-dividing cells’ cause ageing?
A
Non-dividing cells can’t replace by dividing so will die after they have accumulated a certain amount of damage
reasons for damage include:
DNA mutations
Cross-linking of proteins
Free radical generation
Accumulation of toxic by products of metabolism
3
Q
how can UV light cause ageing?
A
- UV light causes protein cross linking
- causes accumulation of abnormal elastic in the dermis of the skin (wrinkles)
- causes the formation of opaque proteins within the lens which usually also results in a loss of lens elasticity (cataracts)
