Affricates Flashcards

1
Q

How are affricates like fricatives?

A

• associated with a period of friction (but the friction intervals tend to be shorter than for fricatives)
.Turbulance - bulk of turbulence of both /tS and dZ/ occurs above 2000 hz

Q

How are affricates like plosives?

A
  • Affricates have transients
  • Have occlusions and bursts
  • Aspirations phases (but more fricative like in duration) e.g in t/tS/ aspiration phase is similar duration to that of the stop /t/

Q

How can affricated be distinguished from fricatives?

A
  • Rise time - the mean rise time by Howel and Rosen was 33ms, contrasted with the mean rise time of 76 for fricatives.
  • The temporal interval from the onset of the consonant until the maximum amplitude of the friction noise.

Q

What are affricates?

A

affricates combine aspects of plosive and fricative and their acoustic characteristics are similar to those of plosives and fricatives at the same place of articulation, except for the duration of the friction portion, which is shorter than fricatives.

Q

How are affricates produced?

A

Like stops, affricates have a period of complete obstruction of the vocal tract. Like fricatives, the affricates are associated with a period of friction.
