4 Basic Tactics to Gather Client Information
- Selective Pacing - allows counselors to gather information without asking questions.
- Imperative Statements - Statements that start with words such as “Tell me…” or Explain…”
- Declarative Leads - Counselor can state or declare her own thoughts followed by silence.
- Questions - direct questions to gather information. Can be yes or no, multiple choice or dilemma, level 1 or 2 probes and faulty questions.
Factors that may impact a client’s financial situation
Potentially discovered during intake process
- Income sources and amounts
- Family structure
- Employment status of other household members
- Debt information, including amounts owed, due dates, interest rates, and delinquency status.
- Monthly and periodic expenses
Items which may be included in intake package
- List of items to bring to counseling session (tax returns, insurance policies, bills, and loan documents, etc.)
- Client Information sheet
- Consent Form
- Budget sheet
- Debt sheet
Ideas for using resources to benefit client
- Use Client’s financial resources to help meet goals
- Use client’s desire to get ahead as motivator for behavior change
- Incorporate client’s desire to work hard to overcome financial difficulties
Declarative Statements
a counselor can state or declare her own thoughts followed by silence to encourage a fuller discussion and open communication
Dilemma Question
Provides a client with alternatives, however, most - if not all - of the alternatives are undesirable
Faulty Questions
Ask a client to provide information that may be embarrassing or that he doesn’t have about his actions
Imperative Statements
Statements that start with words such as “Tell me…” or “Explain…” that provide counselors with another tactic for gathering information without asking questions and to clarify meaning
Level 1 Probes
Are typical who, what when, where, why and how questions designed to gather factual information
Level II Probes
Use the same who, what, when, where, why and how format of Level 1 Probes, but are designed to gather the client’s deeper feelings as opposed to factual information
Selective Pacing
This communication technique uses restatement to allow counselors to explore and gather information without asking questions
