Building Rapport
Process that takes place in the initiating stage of counseling and is characterized by an effort to create a connection, reduce tension, and to provide an overview of the process.
Power
Influence over another person stemming from various sources such as appearance, communicative style, general expertise, specialized knowledge, and the ability to control both decision-making and problem-solving processes for the client’s benefit.
Evaluating Progress
In the evaluation stage, the priority is to review the action plan and evaluate progress toward the goal.
Gathering information
Process takes place in the exploring stage of counseling and is characterized by obtaining the facts and discovering important issues, such as clients’ needs purposes, or goals.
Openness
Individuals’ willingness to share information about the topics under discussion and about personal aspects that relate to the purpose of the relationship.
Taking Action
The client takes specific actions to advance the previously established purposes and/or goals.
Negative Feedback
Type of feedback that helps people understand how their behavior might be undermining their goals.
Constructive Feedback
Type of feedback with the effect of helping people measure how and if their behavior is helping them to achieve their goals.
Realistic Expectations
Exercising knowledge and experience to determine if stated goals are achievable.
Positive Feedback
Type of feedback that helps people understand how their behavior is helping them to achieve their goals.
Strategic Counseling Elements
- Openness - Refers to individuals’ willingness to share information.
- Realistic Expectations - guiding a client to develop realistic goals
- Structure - effective counseling follows a structure appropriate to the setting and goals of the relationship.
- Power - Stems from various sources such as the counselor’s appearance, communicative style, general expertise, specialized knowledge, and ability to control decision-making and problem-solving processes for the client’s benefit.
- Confirmation of Differences - recognize the differences between the client and themselves (the coach/counselor).
- Mutual Involvement - get clients involved so that there is a mutual responsibiity for setting goals, plans to achiece them and for follow-through.

Mutual Involvment
Mutual responsibility between counselor and client for setting goals and developing plans to achieve them and for follow-through.
Four basic stages of counseling
- *Initiating** - building rapport to help people become at ease. provide an overview of the counseling process. Explain the process and be sure to include such things as confidentiality, ethics, roles, and responsibilities.
- *Exploring** - Gathering information stage to determine what individual wants to accomplish.gathering financial information is part of this stage. Find out about concerns, needs, values, interests, resources, gaps in resources, strengths, and anything else that will help you understand the context of your clients’ current reality.
- *Understanding** - clarify what the client would like to accomplish and help them develop well-written goals. The plans should be closely aligned with the goals and should include a system for clients to monitor the strategies and/or track progress toward goals. Once the action plan has been completed, check for any necessary changes or adjustments, and share encouragement.
- *Acting** - last stage and takes place outside of counseling session or meeting. Work toward shifting responsibility to the client. As you teach them to find workable strategies and solutions, they will develop the skills they need to work through future problems on their own.
