Aeromedical (40-8) Flashcards
Spatial Disorientation
Definition, types
Def: Inability to determine position, attitude, motion to surface
Types:
1: Unrecognized, most dangerous
2: Recognized, but not as spatial D (ex. Leans)
3: Incapacitating, overwhelming sensation (ex. Coriolis)
Prevention Spatial D
Treatment Spatial D
Prevent: Never fly IMC/VMC Never fly w/out reference Avoid Stressors Trust Instruments
Treatment (Dr. T)
Delay actions
rely on use/instruments
Transfer controls
Sensory Systems
Visual (80%, reliable)
Prioprioceptive (pressure on body)
Vestibular (inner ear)
Vestibular Illusions
Somatogyral
(Leans, graveyard, coriolis)
somatogravic
(oculogravic fighter ship), elevator (upward), oculoagravic (downward)
Illusions
Somatogyral
Leans - Feel straight, level. Attitude shows bank.
Graveyard Spin - F/W, spin for seconds, reach equilibrium
Coriolis - Most dangerous, overwhelming disorientation in pitch and roll and yaw.
