Aero Flashcards
How many vortex generators exist on a T-45C wing?
20 per side
Subsonic speeds
<0.8 Mach
Force divergent Mach number
0.85 Mach
Predictable longitudinal control
Up to Mach 0.84
Mcrit
0.8 Mach
What causes a tuck under?
Aft movement of the CG around Mcrit
What 5 things improve stability and does the T-45c use them all?
Swept Wings - yes Area Rule - no Irreversible Controls - yes Stabilizing Strips - yes Vortex Generators - yes
Thrust available varies with?
RPM
Density Altitude
Temperature
(Airspeed - in CAI not in gouge)
(T/F) The SBI causes a nose up pitch across all airspeeds.
FALSE
Rudder shock stabilization strips perform what function?
Reduce Rudder Buzz
Artificial stall warning occurs at what AOA?
21.5
What design feature designed to improve stability is not incorporated into the T-45C?
The Area Rule
In a -60 degree spin what airspeed should you expect to see?
50-120 kts
In a spin recovery what is done with the rudder regardless of whether it is erect or inverted?
Rudder full opposite direction of spin
Stall AOA clean configuration?
26 Units
Rudder shakers can only be felt where?
Left pedal, forward cockpit
Under what airspeed does the T-45C have a mild dutch roll tendency?
200 KIAS
Stall characteristics of a swept wing design
Poor lateral stability, wing tips stall first
Approach configuration stall
29 - 30 AOA
How much force is required to counter a rudder blowout?
250 lbs
(T/F) Spiral divergence in a clean configuration is possible.
FALSE, need an asymmetric load.
During flap extension the airplane tends to?
Balloon, settle, have a reduction in stability, (pitch slightly nose down)
(T/F) Pulling out of a dive decelerating .95 mach - .85 mach the T-45C will have a tendency to pitch up.
TRUE
True Airspeed / Speed of Sound =
Mach Number
Having two pilots in the T-45C shift the CG _______ and make it ____ stable.
Forward, More
On-Speed AOA clean?
17 Units
CG location and stability are effected by?
Consumption of fuel and raising/lowering the landing gear (configuration changes)
Inverted spin characteristics
0 AoA, Negative G, Turn needle in direction of spin
Approach Stall Buffet
AoA/knots until stall
28/1
Clean Stall Buffet
AoA/knots untill stall
25/1-2
What makes the T-45C different from other aircraft when dealing with crosswinds?
The upwind wing will generate more lift and rise which places more weight and wheel drag on the downwind landing gear. This additional drag produces more friction at the downwind wheel and the T-45 TURNS AWAY from the crosswind
Maximum G’s below 5000 MSL
6.5
Maximum G’s above 5000 MSL
7.33
Maximum negative G’s above .80 Mach
-1.0
Maximum negative G’s below .80 Mach
-3.0
At approximately 0.92 Mach either wing may become heavy due to a normal shock wave in the wing tip area, reducing wing tip effectiveness. The aircraft will begin a slow roll. How much lateral stick deflection is necessary to counter the roll?
Up to 3/4 lateral stick deflection may be required to maintain wings level flight.
45 degree upright spin descent rate?
15,000 fpm
What effect do external stores have on stall AOA?
Stall occurs about one unit AOA lower with external stores loaded.
“Which of the following is an upright spin NOT characterized by?”
“Recovery AOA increasing past 5 units”
Pro’s and Con’s of Vortex Generators
Pro: In development of the T-45, it was necessary to add vortex generators to prevent wing downwash from adversely affecting stabilator performance in the transonic flight regime.
Vortex generators also improve the aircraft’s slow-speed flight performance by redirecting wing airflow and reenergizing the boundary layer.
Con: During high-speed flight, it is undesirable to place vortex generators on any aircraft surface. All add-on protuberances increase aircraft parasite drag.
Where should you attempt to stop the aircraft from Max Abort Speed?
on remaining runway without using over run or arresting gear
