Aeneid Translation 3 - Androgeos makes a mistake Flashcards
primus se Danaum (370)
First out of the Greeks
magna comitante caterva Androgeos offert nobis, (370,371)
Androgeos offered himself to us with a large mob with him,
socia agmina credens inscius (371, 372)
believing that we were an allied multitiude, unaware,
atque ultro verbis compellat amicis: (372)
and beyond that, he addresses us with friendly words:
“festinate viri! nam quae tam sera moratur segnities?
“Hurry up chaps! For what is the slow dawdling which so delays you?
alli rapiunt incensa feruntque Pergama:
The others are plundering and pillaging Troy as it burns:
vos celsis nunc primum a navibus itis?”
are you going now for the first time from the tall ships?”
dixit, et extemplo (neque enim responsa dabantur fida satis) sensit medio delapsus in hostis.
He spoke, and immediately (for no sufficiently trustworthy responses were being given) he sensed that he had fallen into the middle of the enemy.
obstipuit retroque pedem cum voce repressit.
He became senseless and he pressed back his foot with his voice (he left while talking and then stopped talking)
improvisum aspris veluti qui sentibus anguem pressit humi
Just like a man who steps on a snake he didn’t see
nitens trepidusque
and stepping on it in the rough thorns;
repente refugit attollentem iras et caerula colla tumentem,
alarmed, he suddenly runs from it as it rears up in anger, and its blue neck swells;
haud secus Androgeos visu tremefactus abibat.
not at all was Androgeos trying to get away trembling at the sight of us.
inruimus densis et circumfundimur armis, ignarosque loci passim et formdidine captos sternimus;
We rushed in and poured around them with closely packed weapons and caught by fear, unaware of the city’s layout in all directions, we lay them low;
aspirat primo Fortuna labori.
fortune breathes favourably on our first endeavour.
