Adrenergic Agonists Flashcards
Act directly on both alpha and beta receptors
ID : asthma, allergies (relaxes the airways and reduce swelling)
Epinephrine
Cause release of noradrenaline
ID : rhinitis, colds (decongestant)
Pseudoephedrine
Act directly on alpha receptors
Selective alpha 1 agonist
ID: decongestant in rhinitis and cold
Phenylephrine
Accumulation of noradrenaline at the synapses
ID: no longer used clinically except for treatment of narcolepsy and attention deficiency hyprekinesis
Amphetamines
Acts indirectly on both alpha and bet receptors
Cause release of endogenous cathecolamines
Used as vasopressor
Ephedrine
Selective beta 2 agonist
ID : Used as bronchodilator in asthma and tocolytic agent in premature labor
Terbutaline
Selective alpha 2 agonist
ID : Treatment for hypertension
Clonidine
Dopamine alpha 1 agonist with beta 2 agonist activity
ID : Used for hemodynamic support in patients with low cardiac output (heart failure)
Dopexamine
