Adrenal Hormones Flashcards
What is the adrenal medulla
Central portion
What does medulla secrete?
Epinephrine and norepinephrine
What kind of tissue is the cortex?
Endocrine
What kind of tissue is the medulla?
Neuroendocrine
What’s the order of the “Zonas” from outer most to inner?
Zona glomerulosa, zona fascicularis, zona reticularis
What does Zona glomerulosa secrete
Aldosterone
What about zona fascicularis & reticularis?
cortisol & androgens
What do mineralocorticoids do.
They affect electrolytes … minerals of ECF
What do glucocorticoids do?
They affect blood glucose
How is aldosterone metabolized?
Liver
How is aldosterone excreted?
Kidney
What does aldosterone do?
Absorption of Na and excretion of potassium
What does excess aldosterone do?
Increases ECF due to water reabsorption and Na reabsorption. Increase in blood volume
How does aldosterone effect K?
Less K in the ECF. Hypokalemia leads to muscle weakness and paralysis.
What’s hyperkalemia?
Happens when there’s low aldosterone. Increases K concentration in ECF. Leads to cardiac toxicity, weakness of contraction, arrhythmia and cardiac death
