Describe the identity vs role confusion crisis
Identity: compare themselves to others, attempting to establish their identity and continually evaluate success and happiness with sense of identity
Role confusion: individual can’t successfully determine their identity
-Until stage is reached, individual conforms to society’s expectations
What are the 4 stages of identity development?
1) Identity achievement
2) Identity moratorium
3) Identity foreclosure
4) Identity diffusion
What is identity achievement?
Committed to goals, values and clearly formulated self chosen path, know where they are going
What is identity moratorium?
Not yet definite. still gathering information and making decisions
What is identity foreclosure?
Committed to goals and values without exploring alternatives- guided by authority figures
What is identity diffusion?
Lack clear direction, unsure of any specific goals or valued and perusing them. Threatened by idea of exploring options
How does peer pressure influence adolescents?
- Parental influence decrease
- Peer relationships increase
- Cliques and crowds become key association
- Help express/suppress identity, socially acceptable behaviour
What are the dangers of peer pressure?
Peer groups encourage or promote social norms such as:
- Risk taking behaviours
- Poor personal health
- Obesity
- Eating disorders
- Substance abuse
