Adolescent communication Flashcards
formal operations; abstract reasoning
ability to think of things that are not tangible, also the stage where their thinking turns inwards and they start thinking about themselves and who they are/how they fit
imaginary audience
aspect of adolescent cognition; particularly in females, they think everyone is always watching them (mainly gr 7 ish), very self-conscious phase (dieting, etc); tends to fade but is still there
* use what is effective at the time, ie what’s important to them is what others would see “you’re not taking your insulin, i’ve noticed youur sin is drier”
personal fable
they believe they are invincible and that nothing is going to happen to them; biggest risk takers
* much better if you walk through the possibilities beforehand ie. “if youre getting in a car and everyone is drinking, what do you think you’re going to say?” – much more likely to use wiser decisions
pseudostupidity
they have new powers to think – they don’t have the ability to realize what’s not junk
*hypothetical-deductive reasoning
the “what ifs”; they “know everything” so you have to phrase everything as what if Qs and let them answer them
metacognition
ability to turn thoughts inward (you can ask them “what are you thinking about?”
idealism
the way that they think about the world is the way that everyone should think about the world
affective egocentrism
they believe the way they feel about things is the way that everyone should feel about the same things
multidimensional reasoning
you have to get more complex, ie. what are the pros and cons of these three options? adolescence is time period when most decisions regarding health and health behaviours are made for life **
body image
the way one sees and perceives their own body; a subjective mental image of one’s own body; very important (EDs, steroids) ie. teen w cancer, doesn’t care about looking good for their parents but wants to look good for their friends
peers
significant influence ont heir behaviour and are very important to them
privacy
very important to them, especially in the hospital
identity
overall theyre searching for a sense of identity, if the inside fits with the outside, what they stand for, what they believe in, etc.
