Adnexa of the eye Flashcards
palpebral fissure
space between eyelids when open
3 layers making up eyelid
skin
musculofibrous
palpebral conjunctiva
tarsal plate
stiff plate of connective tissue supporting free edge of each lid
tarsal gland
secretion
found in upper and lower lids
secrete waxy substance to prevent tears from spilling out the eye
orbicularis oculi
close eye
superciliaris
lifts upper eyelid and brow
retractor anguli oculi/bulbi
draws lateral palpebral angle posterior
nerve supply to orbicularis oculi, superciliaris, retractor bulbi
palpebral branch, auriculopalpebral facial nerve
CNVII SVE
levator palpebrae superioris
lift upper eyelid
oculomotor CN III SE
nerve supply to smooth muscle of upper and lower eyelids
sympathetic - AE from cranial cervical ganglion
sensory supply to eye region
ophthalmic trigeminal to upper
maxillary trigeminal to lower
where is lacrimal gland?
dorso-lateral aspect of eye
where are the lacrimal ducts located?
dorsally and ventrally of the medial canthus
nerve supply to lacrimal gland, secretions
parasympathetic AE facial nerve onto ophthalmic trigeminal
sympathetic - cranial cervical ganglion
serous and mucous fluid moisten eyes and supplies cornea
how do tears drain
via nasolacrimal duct -
from lacrimal lake to lacrimal sac, into lacrimal duct then nasal cavity
runs through wall of maxilla then on internal mucosa covered surface opens dorsolateral wall of nostril
