AC 61-3
Three stages of PPL XC how many hours required total?
Each stage is called what and consist of what?
10 hours total
Stage 1 Elementary - being at least 1 hour dual and 1 hr solo
stage 2 - At least 2 hour dual 2 hour solo with at least one landing at a controlled aerodrome and one on uncontrolled at least 25nm from point of departure. (Can be deferred to stage 3 If operationally appropriate)
stage 3 - At least 2 hours dual flight instruction and 2 hours solo flight time, including a diversion requiring low-level navigation (incorporating terrain awareness principles) with at least one landing en route.
At least 1 solo cross-country flight is to be made into controlled airspace in an aircraft equipped
with a functioning two-way radio, Same route in reverse may be utilised.
PPL XC met minima

When can a stage 3 XC be authorised to be done?
until student has done XC competency check.
PPL night XC hour requirements
a total of 10 hours (including 10 take-offs, circuits and landings at night.
* at least 5 hours dual; and
* at least 3 hours dual night cross-country flight instruction.
PPL XC met minima night
the forecasts are at least
3,000 foot ceiling and 16 kilometres visibility.
CPL hour requirements
200hr TT 150 if in approved training course.
100hr PIC
30hr XC which 20 has to be training syllabus and including the XC FT.
10 hours night flying 4 hours dual and 5 hours PIC (incl 10T/O and LDG) (IF YOU WISH TO DO NIGHT)
IT - 10 hours (5hr IFT, 5 can be done in approved synthetic flight trainer)
mountain flying - 5 hours TT, 2 low flying, 2 BMF.
CPL XC FT Requirements and whats included in the FT.
With the completion of the XC Hour requirement syllabus within the last 12 months have completed a FT with A or B category FI.
Candidate may be given the route to fly in advance and is expected to complete all pre-flight navigation within approx 1 hour. flight test is 2 hours and 30 minutes long minimum.
Must include:
flight over varied terrain
controlled airspace
Overhead join
low level diversion at 500AGL
prec landing
FLWOP and EFATO not at home base preferably.
AC 61-2 Medical requiremetns
Current class 2 or DL9.
DL9 should retain the original of their current form and carry at least a copy of that document when flying.
Pre solo language communication requirements AC 61-2
Requires a person to have sufficient ability in reading, speaking, understanding and communicating in English to enable to carry out responsibilities of PIC before FI can authorise to fly solo
In order to meet English language communication requirements what requirements have to be met? 4 things
- Student has completed 2 years secondary education in Aus or NZ education institution, or equivalent of NZ secondary education where instructional language is English
- Student has been employed in Aus, NZ, USA, Canada or UK for at least 3 years,
- has demonstrated proficiency to at least level 4 ICAO proficiency scale
- student has attained at least the minimum score in any English language proficiency test in accordance with the table in AC 61-2
Solo cross country requirements ac 61-2
Requires to hold written exam credits for PPL license before doing solo xc.
Monitoring of Of solo flights by FI what’s required and what’s the general purpose of monitoring
Requires FI who authorise solo flights to monitor actions of the pilot during the flight.
General purpose is to ensure FI has an adequate overview of the actions of student pilot during flight.
What actions are acceptable in regards to monitoring solo fights
FI is preset at aerdrome and conducts a pre-flight briefing
Flight instructor provides guidance on areas through which the flight is to be conducted
Flight instructor is present at time of flight (whether on the ground or in another aircraft, whether in the same airspace or not)
FI will monitor radio frequency when possible.
KDR’s where can you find it where only A or B category instructors can sign off KDR
AC 61-1 Rule 61.21
How long is a flight test valid for? And what happens if you go past it.
3 months so pilots are advised to apply for the issue of their license within this period. Failure means test must be completed again
Appropriately qualified flight instructor what does this mean?
No set definition form AC 61-1 but is recommended that such instructors hold a Cat A, B or D FI rating.
Language Proficiency Endorsement how long are level 6, 5 and 4 valid for and where to find this?
Level 6 - lifetime of holder of pilot license
Level 5 - Valid for 6 year from date of assessment
Level 4 - Valid for 3 years from date of assessment
