Addition Polymers Flashcards

1
Q

What are addition polymers?

A

Plastics - long polymer molecules that are made from smaller monomer molecules joined together ; many ethene molecules join together to form a polymer called poly(ethene)

Q

Why is poly(ethene) an addition polymer?

A

Because the ethene monomers undergo an addition reaction as they contain C=C double covalent bonds (alkenes) ; all alkenes can acts as monomers for addition polymers

Q

How is the model to show addition polymers limited?

A

It is limited because the real polymers mag be made of thousands of smaller monomer molecules but this just disallow a few

Q

How to display addition polymerisation through repeating units?

A

CHANGE DOUBKE BOND TO SINGLE BOND
DRAW TWO LONG BONDS ON EITHER SIDE PASSING THROUGH SQUARE BRACKETS ON OUTSIDE
DISPLAYED FORMULA = REPEATING UNIT AND n ON BOTTOM LEFT
