PHYSICAL DEPENDENCE definition
A
- a result of long-term use
- physiological need for drug, marked by unpleasant withdrawal symptoms when the drug is discontinued
- normal day to day functioning can become reliant on the substance

PSYCHOLOGICAL DEPENDENCE definition
A
- the condition that exists when a person must continue to take a drug in order to satisfy intense mental and emotional craving for the drug
- individual feels/thinks that they cannot cope with work and social life without a social

TOLERANCE
A
- diminishing effect with same dose of drug or behaviour
- requiring larger and larger doses
- neuroadaption= changes at synapses occur, down regulation so receptors are less sensitive

WITHDRAWAL
A
-unpleasant physiological or psychologial effects following discontinued use of a drug
-shakes, tremours, vomiting
- often leads to relapse
acute= within hours usually stops in weeks
post acute= brain slowy reorganises, could takes over months
