*What is the harm reduction model?
A model that views addiction/substance abuse is a health problem, people with ATOD problems can be helped.
- accurate information can help people make responsible decisions about drug use

Define substance abuse
use of any substance that threatens a person’s health or impairs his or her social or economic functioning.

Define drug dependence
A physiological change in the CNS caused by regular use/administration of a drug.
Define drug addiction
Pattern of drug use characterized by an overwhelming preoccupation with getting and using a drug, despite negative consequences
Theories of causes/etiology of substance abuse

- social influences (family, race, ethnicity, culture, economics)
- cross-addiction/poly-drug use

Effects of substance abuse on family
- It is a family disease (family is an interaction) (many is family have it)
- Increases financial difficulties
- Can lead to dysfunctional family characteristics
