Adaptive Immune System- Lymphocyte Recirculation and Homing Flashcards
Why do lymphocytes recirculate?
To seek out their antigens
Which combination of cells need to interact in order to mount an adaptive immune response?
Dendritic T cells, Helper T cells and B cells specific for the same antigen
What do high endothelial venules allow the lymphocytes to do?
Bypass the lymphatic circulation and enter the lymph nodes directly
What are chemokines?
Chemotactic cytokines but with multiple other effects
What can T cells be divided into after they’ve encountered an antigen?
Central memory T cells
Effector memory T cells
Name 3 features of Cell Adhesion Molecules (CAMs)
- Promote cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions
- Can be expressed constitutively or induced by pathogen and host products during inflammation
- Homophillic or heterophillic reactions
What are the 5 main groups of CAMs?
- Cadherins
- Ig-superfamily CAMs
- Mucin like CAMs
- Selectins
- Integrins
What are the 4 families of chemokines(grouped according to arrangement of cysteines in structure)?
C family
CC family
CXC family
CX3C family
What are vascular addressins?
Cell adhesion molecules specific to different parts of the body which activated T cells can recognize in order to return to the site of infection
