Title I:
Employment
Prohibits employer from discriminating against a qualified individual with a disability on the basis of that disability alone
Applies to employers of 15 or more for at lease 20 wks/year
Reasonable accommodations
Compliance to Title I
- Familiar with ADA and be compliant
- Educate staff/employees
- Understand undue burden
- Consult ADA checklist to determine if workplace is compliant
- Person can file a complaint if he or she feels discriminated against.
Environmental Assessments work
ramps, drinking fountains, parking, door knobs, curbs and cutouts. et cetra
A PT/PTA or OT/OTA can perform an environmental assessment.
Ramp
1:12 ratio
Hallways
at least 32 inches wide - 36 inches for one w/c 60 inches for 2 wheelchairs.
Toilets
16 to 19 inches from floor with grab bars.
Ramp
36-48 inches wide
1” rise for 12” run
if rise more than 6 inches - handrails.
If longer than 30 feet, need to change direction with a landing and a slip resistant surface
Threshold
1/4 to 1/2 inch (if beveled)
Counter tops
30-34 inches from floor
Sink height
32-34 inches from floor
Toilet height
18 inches from floor 3’ in front and to one side.
Bed height
18-22 inches.
Parking
1 accessible space for every 25 spaces in lot. One van accessible spot (1 for every 8 accessible spaces. isle 96 inches wide.
Undue Burden/hardship
Any action necessary to provide a reasonable accomodation that would cause employer significant difficulty or expense is not required.

Modifications that will enable persons with disability to perform specific job

– Hotels, restaurants, theatres, auditoriums, stores/shops,
laundromats, gas stations, office buildings, museums, libraries,
parks, zoos, amusement parks, educational institutions, day care
centers, gymnasiums, spas, bowling alleys.
