Acute Viral Hepatitis Flashcards
Cause of increased soluble, conjugated bilirubin in the blood?
mechanical blockage of biliary tract
cause of increased unconjugated bilirubin in the blood?
dysfunction of hepatocytes
When are AST and ALT increased in the blood?
if there is death of hepatocytes, they release their cytoplasmic proteins in the blood
Changes in this hepatocyte?
- In Ballooning degeneration, Hepatocytes show cellular swelling (also called “cloudy swelling” or “hydropic degeneration”).
- This is a manifestation of sub-lethal cellular injury and results from dysfunction of ionic and fluid homeostasis in involved cells.
- Bilirubin (brown color on left)
What happens in ballooning degeneration?
Edema with swelling of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and detachment of ribosomes from the rough ER.
What type of necrosis is typical for viral hepatitis?
Lytic necrosis
What type of cell changes are seen in these pictures?
Left: apoptosis (acidophil bodies)
Right: coagulative necrosis
Differences between necrosis and apoptosis?
