How do you evaluate a patient experiencing pediatric pain
- recognize the patient is in pain
- determine underlying source/location and severity ( SCHOLAR)

How do you assess pain in non verbal children (<3 y/o)
FLACC scale
Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, Consolability
*using motor responses, vocalization, facial expressions to evaluate and assess pain
Pain assessment in children 3-8 y/o
- use face pain scale (0-10 w/ corresponding images)
- visual analog scales (colour analogue scale where red would be much pain)
pain assessemnt in odler children 8-11 y/o
- use a numeric scale of 1-10
(0-3 = mild, 4-6 = moderate, 7-10 = severe)
what are the goals of therapy for treatment of pediatric pain?
- Relieve pain until cause is managed
- identify and treat cause of pain
- if possible, prevent the pain from progressing
what are the non pharmacological strategies for pain treatment in pediatrics?
What are the therapeutic tips for pain management?
- from newborn -> children can experience pain
- chose medicationa nd route of admin according to severity and desired onset and duration of action
- use oral analgesics when possible to avoid painful routes of admin
- consider hepatic and renal function when selecting an analgesic
*ex: dont give ibuprofen when dehydrated
- wait 1-2 h after giving analgesic to see if it is working
