Occurs in <10% of pts with diverticular disease

FBE—leucocytosis: ESR ↑
Pus and blood in stools (profuse bleeding possible in elderly)
Abdominal US/CT scan (best—can detect fistula, abscess or perforation)

Treatment
A
Nil orally
Analgesics
Antibiotics
- –mild cases: amoxycillin + clavulanate bd for 5–7 d
- –severe cases: IV amoxycillin + gentamicin + metronidazole
Surgery for complications
