Investigations

A

FBE—leucocytosis: ESR ↑

Pus and blood in stools (profuse bleeding possible in elderly)

Abdominal US/CT scan (best—can detect fistula, abscess or perforation)

Treatment

A

Nil orally

Analgesics

Antibiotics

  • –mild cases: amoxycillin + clavulanate bd for 5–7 d
  • –severe cases: IV amoxycillin + gentamicin + metronidazole
