Name the 6 yin channels
LU KD LR HT PC SP
Name the 6 yang channels
LI UB GB SI SJ ST
Indications for Jing well points
- Fullness below the Heart
- When the disease is in the Zang Organs
- In Winter
- To Clear Heat, Restore Consciousness, and Rescue Collapse
- To treat the other end of the channel, particularly to clear heat and fullness from it
- To treat disorders of the spirit
Indications for Ying Spring Point
- Heat in the Body - EXCELLENT FOR CLEARING HEAT
- When the disease manifests as a change in complexion
- In Spring
- When the disease is at the yin within yin (Zang organs) needle the ying-spring & shu-stream pts of the Yin channels
- Diseases of the Yang Channels
- For clearing pathogens, stagnation, and heat from the entire channel (both yin & yang channels)
indications for Shu-Stream Points
- Heaviness of the Body and Pain of the Joints - When the disease attacks intermittently
- In Summer
- When the disease is at the yin within yin (Zang organs) needle the ying-spring & shu-stream pts of the Yin channels
- Because the Shu-Stream Points of the Yin channels are also the Yuan Source Points, they are considered the primary points for tonifying and harmonizing their respective Zang organs.
- The shu-stream points of yang channels have relatively little action on their respective Fu organs.
- Diseases of the Yang Channels
indications for Jing-River Points
- Cough and Dyspnea, Chills, and Fever
- When the disease manifests as a change in the patient’s voice
- In Late Summer
- When the disease is at the yin within yang (sinews and bones), use jing-river pts of Yin channels
indications for He-Sea Points
- Counterflow Qi and Diarrhea
- If there is disease of the Stomach and d/o due to irregular eating/drinking
- In Fall
- When the disease is at the yang within yang (skin), needle the he-sea pts. of the Yang channels
Indications for Luo points
- To treat disorders of their interior-exterior paired channel or zangfu organ
- To treat disorders reached by the Luo connecting channel
- To treat psycho-emotional disorders
- When the disease is at the yang within yin (Fu organs)
- Other Luo Points: DU-1, REN-15, and SP-21 (Great Luo)
Indications for Xi- Cleft points
- Acute Conditions
- Pain
- Yin Channel Xi-Cleft Points are also indicated for disorders of blood.
XI Cleft for :
- Yang Qiao
- Yin Qiao
- Yang Wei
- Yin wei

Indications for Yuan Source points
On Yin Channels: tonifying/harmonizing related Zang organ
organ.
On the Yang Channels: minimal effect on the Fu organs. Rather, dispells pathogens and tx disorders along the channel.
Indications for Lower He sea Points
- only on yang channels
- tx Fu (yang) organs
Indications for Window of heaven points
- Disharmony between the qi of the body and the heart, with qi or blood rebelling upwards*
- goitre, scrofula, throat disorders
- coughing, wheezing, or chest oppression from rebellion of lung qi
- vomiting from rebellion of stomach qi
- headache and dizziness
- heat, redness, and swelling of the face or eyes
- disorders of sudden onset
- disorders of the sense organs
- in some cases mental & emotional disorders
Indications for Ghost points
treat mania & epilepsy

When are local points selected
mainly tenderness and Ashi points associate with meridian pts
when are distal point selected
Along the disease meridian
- Same name meridian pairs – e.g. paired Hand/ foot yangming channels (ST, LI)
- Yin yang paired meridians – e.g. paired earth channels. (SP/ST)
when are symptomatic points selected
such as fever, sweating, coma, insomnia, etc.
when are points selected due to syndrome diff
- Another way to treat the entire body condition and the root cause
- Zang-Fu or 6 confirmation dx
experience points
based on physician experince
what are the 6 combining methods
diseased meridian distal-local anterior-posterior ext-int upper-lower left- right
diseased meridian
Match points along with meridians and collaterals
distal-local points
Not limited to diseased meridian.
- Choose 1 local and 2 distal OR 2 local and 4 distal.
anterior-posterior points
Disease of internal organs/trunk
exterior-interior points
Yin-Yang pairs
Example: if patient has a cold with nasal congestion, commonly used LI4, LU7
upper-lower points
Treat upper diseases with lower points
Treat lower diseases with upper points
left / right points
???
5 shu combining method
Jing-Well points for fullness of upper abdomen
Ying-Spring points for body heat (fever)
Shu-Stream points for heavy body and articulatory pain Jing-River points for asthma, cough, alternating chills/fever
He-Sea points for counterflow of qi and diarrhea
mother-son tonifying/reduce method
- Reduce the son for excessive syndromes. Tonify the mother for deficient syndromes
- Choose point on the affected meridian
- Pick points from external-internal (biao li) related meridians
- Select points from meridians according to mother-son relation of organs
- Select points from son meridian or mother meridian
Back-Shu and Front-Mu Points
combining method
- Select front-mu points for six fu organ disease
- Combination or alternation for back-shu points and front-mu points for zangfu organ disease
- Select back-shu points for 5 sense organs and tissues
Yuan-Source and Luo-Collateral
Yuan-Source Points:
- Tx or dx internal Zangfu organ dz
- Tx local symptoms where the corresponding meridians distributed
Luo-Connecting Points:
- Tx the syndromes of exteriorly-interiorly related meridians and internal Zangfu organs
- Tx Luo Mai (Collateral) disease – in this case, you have to just use luo- connecting points.
Combination of 8 Confluent Points
PC-6 (Yin Wei/Linking) / SP4 (Chong):
- Used in combination to treat problems of the ST, HT, chest, diaphragm
LU-7 (CV) / KD6 (Yin Qiao/Heel):
- Used in combination to treat Lung, chest, diaphragm and throat,
SI-3 (GV) / UB62 (Yang Heel):
- Treats neck, inner canthus, ear and shoulder.
GB-41 (Dai) / TB5 (Yang linking)
- Treats neck, outer canthus, ear, shoulder, cheek.
use of xi celft points
For acute cases and pain syndromes
use of lower- he sea points
Treats disease of the fu organs
what constitutes a tonifying technique
withdraw needle rapidly withdraw slowly
close hole with rapid and heavy press enlarge hole upon removal and keep open
9
shall to deep deep than shallow
heavy thrust, smaller range amplitude heavier lift, bigger range of amplitude
slower frequency faster frequency
shorter trusting time than lifting shorter lifting time than thrusting
stress forward rotation with thumb, small twist
shorter time on forward rotation than backward
With meridian
inhale by nose and exhale by mouth exhale by nose and inhale by mouth
withdraw during inhale
withdraw during exhale
what constitutes a reducing technique
withdraw slowly enarge hole when removing anf keep open 6 deep than shallow heavier lift, bigger range of amplitude faster frequency shorter lifting time than thrust stress on backwars, bigger twist shorter time on backward rotation than forward with channel exhale by nose inhale by mouth withdraw during exhale
points to avoid in preg.
LI 4 SP 6 UB 67 GB 21 ST 12 LR 3 lower abdomen, lower back deep abdominal needling intense stimulation of needles in lumbar or back region
tx for needing fainting
- remove all needles
- DU-26 w/ needle or acupressure
- consider LI-4
- after pt has regained consciousness, use moxa on Bai Hui, KD-1, REN-8, PC-6, and ST-36
(if a helper is available, can do while pt is unconscious)
tx pneumothorax
- Calm the pt and have the patient recline, but not lay down
- in severe cases, send to ER
