ACTIVITY 11 Flashcards
______ measurement is usually requested with bleeding time as among the pre-operation or coagulation therapy procedures.
This test may also be performed by trained phlebotomists.
Clotting time
It is clotting (coagulation) reaction that completes _____ by reinforcing primary hemostasis induced by _____. The final aim of clotting reaction is the formation of _____ which has a leading role in secondary hemostasis. Prolonged coagulation time is observed in the presence of ____ and _____
hemostasis
blood platelets
fibrin
circulating anticoagulants and deficiency of coagulation factors V, VII, VIII, IX, and X.
Materials (6)
• Gloves
• Disposable blood lancet
• Sterile gauze
• 70% isopropyl alcohol
•Stopwatch
• Clean glass slide
Procedure
- Identify the patient properly.
- Prepare all the materials needed.
- Clean the selected area with alcohol and allow it to air-dry.
- Puncture the selected site to a depth of 3 mm.
- Wipe off the first drop of blood.
- Start the timer once the second drop of blood appears.
- Place the second drop of blood onto the glass slide.
- Pass the tip of the lancet through the drop of blood every 30 seconds and check for the formation of fibrin strands.
- Stop the timer when fibrin strands are seen attached to the tip of the needle.
- Record and interpret the results.
Normal Values: 2-4 minutes
