Q

What is the process of active transport like the sodium potassium pump

A

-Molecules bind to receptor complementary (only molecules that are complementary to carrier protein can bind to it ) in shape on the proteins
-ATP binds to the carrier proteins from inside of the cell and its hydrolysed into ADP+Pi
-This causes carrier protein to change shape and release molecules to the other side
-Phosphate ion is then released and the protein returns to its original shape

Q

What is the process of co transport of glucose and sodium ions in the Iluem

A
  • Sodium ions are actively transported ( requires atp) out of the epithelial cells into the blood
-This reduces sodium ion concentration in the epithelial cell
-Sodium ions can diffuse from lumen down their concentration gradient into the epithelial
-The protein sodium ions diffuse through is a co transporter protein so glucose attach and are also transported into the epithelial cell against the concentration gradient
-Glucose then moves by facilitated diffusion from epithelial cell to the blood cell
