Active Ingredients from Microorganisms: Spirulina Flashcards
1
Q
What is Spirulina?
A
- grows in both freshwater and salt water
- cyanobacteria i.e. blue-green algae
2
Q
How does it benefit your skin?
A
- Rich in Antioxidants (phycocyanin, allophycocyanin scavenges free radicals, reducing oxidative damage)
- Spirulina extract contains a mixture of proteins, flavonoids, alkaloids, triterpenoids (promotes collagen 1) and carotenoids that work together to speed up wound healing and tissue regeneration
- natural defense mechanisms against UV damage, produce mycosporin-like amino acids (absorb UV rays similar to the way chemical ingredients in sunscreen work), promotes skin barrier repair (stratum corneum hydration)
