Act 5 Scene 1 Flashcards
Scene 1 Summary
- Roderigo attempts to kill Cassio
- Roderigo is injured and Iago kills Cassio
- Emilia is instructed to tell Othello and Desdemona what happened by Iago
‘Quick, fear nothing, I’ll be at thy elbow’
Iago - He almost mentors Roderigo in killing Cassio (Stage direction of him retiring as he slips into shadows because he represents the darkness within the play)
‘Whether he kill Cassio or Cassio him, or each do kill the other, every way make my gain’
Iago - Complete lack of feeling towards the fact that people are about to die because of him; evil and spiteful to the point where it is entertaining
‘If Cassio do remain he hath a daily beauty in his life that makes me ugly’
Iago - Jealousy over Cassio’s pureness; he hasn’t actually done anything wrong despite Iago tainting his image
‘O, I am slain!’
Roderigo - Foolish (Authorial Method; chaos on stage) as he doesn’t actually die and should be performed in an overdramatic way (Iago wounds Cassio in the leg from the darkness which is seen as cowardly)
‘Brave Iago, honest and just’
Othello - Juxtaposes the traits the audience had just seen prior to his entrance
‘Thou teachest me, Strumpet I come’
Othello - So wrapped up in Iago’s plan that he sees him as a mentor in killing much as Roderigo had
‘O damned Iago, O inhuman dog’
Roderigo - He is the first to realise that Iago is behind all this but it is too late as he is dead; this is comedic as Roderigo is the fool and has realised this before anybody else
‘I do suspect this trash to be a party in this injury’
Iago - By alluding to the idea that Bianca has something to do with Cassio’s injury it proves he is willing to throw anybody under the bus if it serves him well (Her voice is silenced as everyone believes Iago over a prostitute woman)
‘Emilia run you to the citadel and tell my lord and lady what hath happened’
Iago - Prerequisite as he wants Emilia as a witness to prove that he had no part in this
‘This is the night that either makes me or fordoes me quite’
Iago - Knows there is potential for something to go wrong but his revenge plan will succeed either way so he doesn’t care
