Act 2 - Scene 9 (Churchyard) Flashcards
Only friends and family are welcome here and you don’t fall under either category.
He’s my best mate.
‘Was’, Jack. ‘Was’ your best mate!
It’s not my fault.
We’re all going back to the club. Do us all a favour will you and don’t show your face in
there … again (He exits)
Why didn’t I listen to you mate? You were right all along and I just didn’t listen! This is all
because of that bloody contract! If I hadn’t signed it you’d still be alive, Jane would still be
with me. If only there was a way I could take it all back (Throughout the above there is the
sound of tapping) Who’s there?
Only me! Just making an
adjustment to my headstone.
Adjustment?
They spelt my name wrong.
Well, can you keep it down mate, I’m trying to pay my last respects?
Righti-ho!
(Double-take) Tom?
(Reappearing) Yes?
You’re alive!
Not quite.
You’re a ghost?
Kind of! Scary, huh? (He makes a ghostly noise) I just came to warn you that you will be
visited by three ghosts! No, I’m only kiddin’.
My life just gets weirder by the second.
(Trying to lighten the mood) You think yours is weird? Last night Elvis really did stop by for
a game of monopoly (Failing) So, how’s Maggie doing?
She hasn’t stopped crying all week. She misses you … we all do. (Regretfully) Tom, I don’t
know what to say. I never meant for this to happen.
I know mate but we all make mistakes. What’s important is that we own up to ttlem and
learn from ‘em. You know, it’ ain’t ever too late to say you’re sorry … never too late to make
amends.
But J signed the contract. There’s no getting out of it now … damned forever. Tom, I’m
sorry. You know I am.
Hey, I know. Look, it’s no so bad up here … d’ya know … (No response) You can’t leave
things like this. You need to talk to Jane …
I’ve been trying to ….
… and Terry’s not a bad bloke. There’s no reason why you two couldn’t patch things up.
After all. you’re gonna need a new best mate now.
I could never replace you. You’re always there for me.
‘Be careful
what you wish for because one day that wish might just come true’.
Mum?
She sends her love. She watches you all the time, mate. Make her proud1 Make us both
proud.
See you later, Tom.
