Act 1, Scene 5: Harvey/Howel Flashcards
Hi, Sexpot!
Hello, Don Juan.
I saw the first lady of the theater leave with her pet cat. Where have they gone?
Out to dinner.
Good! That means you’re on your own for a couple of hours.
Please, harvey! Not in here. She might come back. She’s always forgetting something.
I’m going out for a bite of food myself. I’ll be back in half an hour. Will you come upstairs to my room for a little while?
My god, you’re insatiable!
I’m mad about you Eve. Please come up to my room.
All right, I’ll see.
If she doesn’t come back early.
Darling, I did what You suggested.
I persuaded Mrs Roberts to ask her.
I think it may be okay.
I’m sure it’s a better idea than my mentioning it.
You’ve got to support 👙 the suggestion
Tell them it’s an excellent idea.
That you’ve ALWAYS felt 🎱 you can’t direct the understudies properly, when you have to be up on the stage half the time⏳,
reading the old 👵🏻girl’s part.
I already told you I’ll back up the idea. I want to help you get ahead. Honestly I do.
So long as we understand each other, angel. Now run along and let me eat my dinner.
I’ll hurry back.
And Harvey
Remember,
if this gets out,
if they ever suspect there’s anything between us,
I’ll see that you….
Good evening Eve I just met Harvey at the stage door. He said my wife had left the theater. Where did she go?
Sardis, Mr howell. Mrs Roberts dropped in unexpectedly.
Oh! Well, I’ll go over there and join them.
Mr howell, can you spare a second? I’d like to talk to you about something.
What is it eve?
It’s something Mrs Robert suggested to me.
We had a few moments Alone together just now.
She said that when she and Mr Roberts were in Florida, he was worried because Miss Crane has no understudy.
Apparently it’s been on his mind ever since Miss Caswell had to rehearse with Harvey. Harvey’s such a terrible actor.
Mr Roberts thinks it’s a great handicap to the understudies, as well as any other replacements that might have to come in.
Mrs Roberts thought it might be a good idea if I covered Mrs Crane’s part.
You, eve? Do you think you’re capable of doing that?
I know I’d never be allowed to go on. But I have done a bit of acting.
I know all the lines.
It would simply be a convenience to the other actors.
But you’re not a professional. You’d have to join actors equity.
I wouldn’t mind doing that!
Anyway, it’s up to you, Mr Howell.
There’s one other point 📉that occurred to me too.
When we go on tour, I can take over Ms Caswell’s understudy as well. I’ll be going anyway.
This means you would save an extra salary.🤑
For the first time this idea begins to appeal to me! Very well Eve. If that’s what Lloyd wants, it’s all right with me
Oh, Mr howell, thank you! Thank you very much. The extra salary will be a godsend. I have to dress so much better now. My expenses have gone up with hairdressers and everything. You really are a most generous person. I’d do anything to show you how grateful I am.
Thank you eve. That was quite a reward from a weeping widow. I enjoyed it. If I didn’t know you were so loyal to my wife, I might misconstrue your enthusiasm. May I give you a bit of advice, eve, should you ever take up acting seriously?
What is it?
