Acronyms Flashcards
TOLAC
- Trial of Labor after Cesarean
2. A woman who choses to have a vaginal delivery after having a previous C-section
GBS
- Group B streptococcus
- Leading cause of early-onset neonatal infections and late-onset postpartal infections - In women, this is marked by:
- UTI, postpartum endometritis, bacteremia, and wound infections complicating C section
P C/S
- Primary Cesarean section
2. 1st C-section performed on a pregnant woman
R C/S
- Repeat Caesarean section
2. Woman has had on or more previous C-sections
AROM
- Artificial Rupture of Membranes
- Amniotomy:
- Intentional rupture of the amniotic sac with a sterile amniohook, allis forceps, or amniotome to stimulate or augment labor
SROM
- Spontaneous rupture of membranes
2. Contractions towards the end of labor cause membranes to rupture (water breaks)
ROM
- Rupture of Membrane
2. The rupture of the amniotic sac as a normal result of dilation of the cervix uteri in labor
GDM
- Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
2. Maternal hyperglycemia (Insulin resistance that begins or is first dx during pregnancy)
GA
- Gestational Age
2. THe age of an embryo or fetus as timed from the date of onset of the last menstrual period
EDD, EDB, EDC
- Estimated Date of Delivery, Birth, or Confinement
2. Uterus enlarges in a predictable pattern that provides info on fetal growth and helps confirm EDD
FHR (FHT) **
- Fetal Heart Tone: Cardiotocograph is used to monitor fetal heartbeat and uterine contractions typically during 3rd trimester
- Fetal heart rate
- FHR is between 120 and 160 BPM
FSE
- Fetal Scalp Electrodes
- Internal monitor that detects electrical signals from the HR
- Continual electrical monitoring
- Used during high-risk pregnancies
FHRP
- Fetal heart rate pattern
- Determination of baseline FHR variability is based on visual assessment and excludes sinusoidal patterns
- Accelerations, Late & early decelerations, Variable decelerations & Prolonged decelerations
NST
- Non-stress test
- Measure heart rate of the fetus in response to its own movements ( no stress is used during test)
- FHR should increase with movement
IUGR / FGR
- Intrauterine growth retardation (restriction) / Fetal Growth restriction / retardation
- A decreased rate of fetal growth, most commonly r/t to inadequate placental perfusion
- Inflants birth weight is below the 10th percentile on intrauterine growth curve for the calculated gestational period
IUFD
- Intrauterine fetal death
2. Death of the fetus while in utero
PIH
- Pregnancy Induced Hypertension
- High BP in pregnancy (preeclampsia or eclamspia)
- Occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy
PKU
- Phenylketonuria
- Congenital disease marked by failure to metabolize phenylalanine to tyrosine.
- Results in severe neurological deficits in infancy
SVE
- Sterile Vaginal Exam
- Exam of the vagina, cervix, adnexa, and fetus during labor
- Used to determine the progress of labor
LMP / LNMP
- Last menstrual period / last normal menstrual period
2. Helps determine Gestational Age
IUPC
- Intrauterine Pressure catheter
- Internal monitor inserted into the uterus between baby & uterine wall that provides precise measurements of contractions
EBL
- Estimated Blood Loss
2. Estimated amount of blood loss during delivery
NSVD
- Normal Spontaneous Vaginal Delivery
- NSVD occurs when a pregnant female goes into labor w/out the use of drugs or techniques to induce labor, and delivers her baby in the normal manner w/out forceps, vacuum extraction, or c-section
VBAC
- Vaginal Birth after C-section
2. Women who had previous c-section delivered next baby vaginally
VAVD
- Vacuum Assisted Vaginal Delivery
- Vacuum w/ soft plastic cup is inserted into birth canal & attached to baby’s head. MD then uses vacuum handle to guide baby through birth canal
FH
- Fundal height
2. Used to evaluate fetal growth while confirming gestational age
EFM
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring
- Either internal or external monitor used to note any unusual changes in fetal heart rate and uterine changes
- Used late in pregnancy
UC
- Uterine Contractions
2. Periodic, rhythmic, tightening of the uterine muscle
PTL
- Pre-term Labor
2. Labor that begins before completion of 37 weeks from the last menstrual period
