What is ‘acromegaly’?
A
- a condition caused by benign pituitary adenoma of the somatotrophs
- excess secretion of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1

Describe the phsyiology of growth hormone?
A
- somatotrophs in the anterior pituitary release growth hormone
- GH acts on liver to synthesis and release IGF- 1

How does IGF-1 act in the body?
A
- proliferative effects on bone, cartilage, skeletal muscles
- Hyperglycaemia - impaired glucose tolerance caused by binding to insulin receptors

How does acromegaly affect soft tissues
A
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- macroglossia + deeping of voice
- hyperhidrosiis - excess sweating

How does acromegaly affect skletal tissue?
A
- coarsening of facial features - enlarged nose, forehead and jaw
- widened hands and feet

Name some medical complications caused by acromegaly?
A
- cardiovascular disease - hypetension
- cardiomyopathy - Diabetes mellitus
- Increased risk of polyps and colorectal cancer

How does acromegaly present in children?
A
Gigantism - caused increase in height aswell because the epiphyseal plates have not closed.
