acids bases and alkali + reactions Flashcards
acid + base reaction
acid + base> salt + water
zinc oxide+ sulphuric acid> zinc sulphate + water
observations of an acid + base reaction
-base disappears as it is used up in the reaction
how to make salt crystals using acid + base reaction
1.) add excess base to hot acid eg ZnO to
H2SO4
2.) filter out excess base, salt solution (ZNSO4) is collected in an evaporating basin
3.) heat salt solution until crystals start to form around edges of basin
4.) cool and leave salt solution to crystalise, evaporation of water allows crystals to form
definition of an acid
H+ Donor
definition of a base
H+ acceptor
acidic PH alkaline ph
7- 7+
definition of an alkali
oh+ acceptor
name three acids
hydrochloric acid- HCl
Nitric acid- HNO3
sulphuric acid- H2SO4
carbonic acid- H2CO3
name 3 alkali
sodium hydroxide- NaOH
Potassium hydroxide-KOH
ammonium hydroxide- NH4OH
bases
ammonia
all metal oxides and metal hydroxides
acid + carbonate reaction
acid + carbonate> salt + water + carbon dioxide
observations of a acid + carbonate reaction
-carbonate disappears- used up in reaction
-fizzing- because a gas is produced
