Acids & Bases Flashcards
How can you tell if a substance is an acid?
It is an acid if you find an H at the beginning of the chemical formula. Acids also produce hydronium ions when dissolved in water
How can you tell if a substance is a base?
It is a base if you find OH at the end of the chemical formula. Bases also produce hydroxide ions when dissolved in ions
How can you tell if a substance is a salt?
It doesn’t contain an H at the beginning or OH at the end. It is also a salt if it isn’t H2O
How can you tell if something is a strong acid?
You can tell if it’s a strong acid if its pH level is closer to 1
How can you tell if something is a strong base?
Its pH level is closer to 14
What is neutralization?
A chemical reaction between an acid and base. It produces salt and water
