Acids And salts Flashcards
Acid + metal oxide —->
Salt + water
Acid + metal hydroxide —–>
Salt + water
Acid + metal carbonate —–>
Salt + water + carbon dioxide
What is an acid
a substance that forms aqueous solutions with pH of less than 7. Acids form H+ ions in water
What is a base
a base is a substance with a pH greater than 7
What is an alkali
a base that dissolves in water to form a solution with pH greater than 7. Lkalis form OH- ions in water.
What is the reaction between acids and bases called
Neutralisation (acid + base = salt + water )
What is the neutralisation reaction in terms of H= and OH- ions
H+ (aq)+ OH- (q)—> H2O(l)
For every decrease of 1 on the pH scale how much does the concentration of H+ ions increase
By a factor of 10
