Q

How to identify acids and alkalis:

A
  1. Universal indicator: an acid solution will turn the indicator red, orange or yellow
  2. Ph less than 7
  3. Blue litmus paper turns red for acid
  4. Red litmus paper turns blue for alkali

Q

What is a conjugate acid and base pair?

A

Pair of compounds that differ by a proton and can both accept and donate hydrogen ions which is called conjugate acid-base pair

A proton is added to get a conjugate acid

A proton is removed to get the conjugate base

Example: HClO4 —> H+ + ClO4-

Q

pH

A

Below 7 is acid and above 7 is basic. Water is 7

All acids contain hydrogen cations H+

All alkalis contain anions OH-
