Acids and Bases Flashcards
1
Q
Acid
A
Acid starts with hydrogen
2
Q
What does the base do
A
Base react with acids to neutralize them producing a salt and water
3
Q
How to identify acids and alkalis:
A
- Universal indicator: an acid solution will turn the indicator red, orange or yellow
- Ph less than 7
- Blue litmus paper turns red for acid
- Red litmus paper turns blue for alkali
4
Q
What is a conjugate acid and base pair?
A
Pair of compounds that differ by a proton and can both accept and donate hydrogen ions which is called conjugate acid-base pair
A proton is added to get a conjugate acid
A proton is removed to get the conjugate base
Example: HClO4 —> H+ + ClO4-
5
Q
Hydronium ion
A
H3O+
Concentration of solution depends on how much solute is dissolved in a solvent
6
Q
pH
A
Below 7 is acid and above 7 is basic. Water is 7
All acids contain hydrogen cations H+
All alkalis contain anions OH-
