Acids and Bases Flashcards
- What are the general components of acids (elements wise)?
- Give examples of general acids.
- starts with an H and is usually attached to a NON-metal
Examples
* HCl
* HF
* HNO3
* H2SO4
* H3PO4
* HC2H3O2 or CH3OOH (acetic acid)
- What are the general components of bases (elements wise)?
- has OH OR is a metal attached to an H (ie. NaH)
What is said in the arrhenenius theory of acids and bases?
- Acid release a hydrogen ion (H+) into sln, and becomes hydronium (H3O+) when in water
- bases release a hydroxide ion (OH-) into sln
examples are in ipad
What is said in the Bronsted- Lowry Theory of acids and bases?
- acids are proton DONORS
- bases are proton ACCEPTORS
- Acid + Base –> CA + CB
examples are in ipad
What is a proton technically?
a hydrogen ion (H+) bc when hydrogen loses an electron, it turns into H+, which has 1 proton
- What are 2 examples of amphoteric substances?
- What does that mean?
- H2O and H2PO4-
- they are able to either donate or accept a proton
Acid makes what based on the B-L theory
conjugate base through losing a proton / H+
Base makes what based on the B-L theory?
a conjugate acid through gaining a proton / H+
How do you find the CA or CB?
H2O
* CA = H3O+ [ add a H and add a charge]
* CB= OH- [ subtract a H and decrease in 1 charge]
What are 4 characteristics of strong acids and bases?
- they dissociate or ionize COMPLETELY in sln [ soluble]
- highly reactive
- good electrical conductors bc they have lots of free flowing electrons
- have a single arrow to completion for chemical eq.
What are some examples of strong acids?
- HCl
- HBr
- HI
- HNO3
- H2SO4
- HClO4
What are some examples of strong bases?
- NaOH
- KOH
- Ba(OH)2
- H- and O2- > OH-
What are 3 characteristics of weak acids and bases?
- dissociate or ionize PARTIALLY OR NOT at all in a sln [insoluble]
- poor electrical conductors
- have a reversible arrow in a chemical eq.
What are some examples of weak acids?
- acetic acid (CH3COOH or HC2H3O2)
- HF
- NH4+ (ammonium)
What is an example of a weak base?
NH3 (ammonia)
