acids and bases Flashcards
what is pH?
a measure of the number of hydrogen ions in a water-based fluid
what has a neutral pH of 7?
pure water
between lower and high pH fluids, which has more hydrogen ions?
lower pH fluids have more hydrogen ions than higher pH fluid
water molecules will dissociate into hydrogen (H+) and hydroxide (OH-) ions
H2O (water molecule)> OH- (hydrogen ion) > H+ (hydrogen ion) > H2O (water molecule)
what are acids?
substances that give up hydrogen ions in water
what do acids have below 7?
have a pH below 7
what’s an example of an acid?
lemon juice (pH of 2)
what do acids range from?
weak to strong
is gastric fluid inside stomach weak or strong?
strongly acidic with a pH of 1-2
what do bases do?
accept hydrogen ions from water
what do bases have as far as pH?
bases have a pH above 7
what’s an example of base(s)?
baking soda dissolved in water
more acidic (0-7) to more basic (7-14)
