Acids and alkalies Flashcards
what is the ph scale used for
to measure how acidic or alkaline a substance is
when can youse use a universal indicator
to detect how acidic or alkaline a substance is
what is a strong acid
it appears red in a ph scale and has small numbers from 1-2
what is a week acid
it apears orange or yellow as a slightly bigger number 4-5
what is a neutral acid
it appears green as the number 7
what is a weak alkaline
it will be blue and is the number 8-9
what is a strong alkaline
purple and will be 13 or 14
what sign is used for strong acids and alkalines
corrosive symbol
what is a sign used for weak acids
irratable symbol which is an x
what colour is litimuspaper wth an acid and alkali
red with acid and blue for alkli
what colour is phenel phthalein with an acid and alakli
clear with acid and pink with alkali
what is the strength of an acid linked to
the concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution
what happens when a weak acid tries to ionize
it doesb;t fully ionise, not all of the acid has turned into ions
how do you classify a weak or strong acid
depends on the extent to which they ionize or dissociate
a weak acid is able to reform the starting mole cule what does this mean
it leads to a low concentration of H+ in thee solution
if the acid is strong what does it mean in terms of ionized or dissociated
it means it is 100% ionized in water
if the acid is weak what does it mean in terms of ionized or dissociated
it means only partly dissociated or ionized in water
