allotropes of carbon Flashcards
what are allotropes of carbon
they are made out of carbon atoms
what are examples of allotropes of carbon flashcards
diamond,graphite,fullerines and carbon nanotubes
how is graphene arranged as giant covalent bond
sheets of carbon are arranged in a lattice of hexagons and can be one atom thick
what are the properties of graphene
a super electrical conductor
what are the uses of graphene
solar panels, computers and mobile phones
how many bonds do carbon atoms form in a diamond
4 carbon atoms
how many carbon atoms form in graphite
3 carbon atoms and one delocalised electrons
why graphite so soft and slippery
layers of carbon can slide from each other due to the weak intermolecular forces in the layers .each carbon atom is attached to three other carbon atoms by strong covalent bonds one electron is delocalized it leaves the shell and become a sea of delocalized electrons in graphite form electricity
what are fullerenes
made out of carbon atoms and you can have diffrent shapes but they are based on hexagons to form ddiffrent shapes
what are bucky balls
they have 60 carbon atoms and it was made in the lab .It is a black solid at room temperature which does not conduct electricity. The physical properties of buckminsterfullerene are:it is insoluble in water but dissolves in petrol to form a deep red solution. Its molecules are strong and hard,The molecules can be used as cages to trap atoms and smaller molecules inside them. The surface of C60 molecules can be coated with other atoms. For example, coating with hydrogen makes a smooth substance that is even more slippery than Teflon. The molecules can be joined together to make bigger fullerene structures.
are bucky hollo and if so what happens
you can put drugs in them and send them into areas of the body with a large surface area, you can send them into the desired place
what are the full properties of fullerenes
high dens strength
good conductor of electricity
unreactive
large surface area to volume ratio
what are the uses of fullerenes
- renforce spring equipment
- electronics chips amd curved screenss
- deliver medcine
- Non-stick slippery coatings for machinery, which act like miniature ball bearings.
-Some of the uses of fullerenes that scientists are currently working on include:
-Cages to hold drug molecules that can be delivered directly into the body. - Molecular sieves, which traps large particles like viruses while allowing smaller, healthy particles to pass through.
- Chemical sponges to soak up toxic substances in the body.
what are nanotubes
Nanotubes are another form of fullerene. They are tubes of carbon hexagons, like sheets of graphite rolled into cylinders.Nanotubes have many useful properties, including:very high tensile strength, unique electrical properties ,good heat conductance.Multi-walled nanotubes exist. In these, several tubes can rotate and slide within in each other, almost without friction.Metal atoms can be attached to the outer surface of the tubes.
what are properties of fullerenes
elastic like a footballer,so it can be squashed and boune back into its orginal shape
