Seperating mixtures Flashcards
what is a mixture
A mixture is two or more different atoms that are not chemically joined and can be separated easily
Name an example of a mixture
sand and water
What is filtration used for
to separate an insoluble solid from a solvent
What is a solvent
a liquid
What is the first step of filteration
Pour your solution into the filter paper sitting on top of the funnel that is connected to the conical flask
What is the second step of filtration
The sand will remain in the filter paper as residue
What is the third step of filtration
The water will travel through the funnel into the conical flask and become filtrate
What is the use of evaporation and crystallization
To seperate a soluble substance from a solution
Name an example of a mixture you would use for crystallization or evaporation
Salt and water
What is first step of crystallization/evaporation
Pour your mixture into the evaporating dish/basin
What is the second step of crystallization/evaporation
Then heat it using a bunsen burner,
What is the third step of crystallization/evaporation
The water will then evaporate and leave behind salt crystals
What is the use of simple distillation
Separate a liquid solvent from dissolved substances
What is the first step of simple distillation
put your mixture into the round bottom flask
What is the second step of simple distillation
Then heat it using a bunsen burner and the liquid will evaporate turning it into gas
