Acids, Alkalis And Salts Flashcards
What number range and colour on the PH scale is an acid
1-6, red
What colour and number is neutral on the PH scale
7, green
What colour is the indicator phenolphthalein in acid and alkali
Acid = Colourless
Alkaline = pink
What number range and colour is Alkali on the PH scale
Purple, 8-14
What indicator is Red in acid and yellow in alkaline solutions
Methyl orange
What colour does litmus paper go in acidic solutions and alkaline solutions
Acidic = red
Alkaline = blue
What is a base
A chemical that neutralises acids producing salt and water
What are the steps to carrying out a titration
1: using a PIPETTE transfer (25cm3) of ALKALI to a conical flask
2: Add some drops of any indicator to the same conical flask
3: fill a BURETTE with some acid
4: Add the ACID to the ALKALI slowly and swirl the comical flask after each drop
5: once you start to notice a colour change , add the acid slowly.
6: once the alkali has been NEUTRALISED, read the burette from the BOTTOM of the MENISCUS
7: Repeat the titration and calculate a mean
