Acids & Alkali Flashcards
What is used to test for pH
pH paper or universal indicator
Describe an Acid
Describe an alkali
ph of >7
Turns pH paper/indicator blue, purple, violet
Higher concentration of OH- ion opposed to H+ ions
Describe a neutral solution
pH of 7
Turns pH paper/indicator green
Equal concentration of H+ ions to OH- ions
How is an acid produced
An acid is produces when a non-metal oxide react with water
How is an alkali made ?
When a soluble base (metal oxide, hydroxide or carbonate) dissolve in water
What is an acid
An acid is a substance that has or can donate H+ ions. Soluble non-metal oxides are acids.
What is a base?
A base is a substance that can neutralise an acid. A base can be solid or aqueous.
Metal oxides, hydroxides and carbonates are bases.
What is an alkali
An alkali is a soluble base but it must dissolve in water to give an Alkali pH. It can neutralise an acid. When dissolved in water it will contain OH- ions.
What is the definition of concentration
Concentration is the number of particles in a litre of water.
What is the relationship between concentration and the pH and acidity
As the concentration of an acid increases so too will the acidity increase and the pH decrease
What are three common laboratory acids.
Hydrochloric acid
Nitric Acid
Sulphuric acid
