acids Flashcards
define acids
an acid may be defined as a substance which
–> contains hydrogen and when dissolved in water gives
–>hydrogen ions or hydronium ions as the only positively charged ion
how do acids taste
sour
the physical state of acids
some are solids while others are liquid at room temperature
example of solid acids
boric acids (H3BO3) oxalic acid (H2C2O4)
example of liquid acids
acetic acids (ch3cooh) formic acid (HCOOH)
when blue litmus comes in contact with acid what happens
in turns red
when methyl orange comes in contact with an acid what happens
it turns red
when acid comes in contact with pink colour of phenolphthalein
it turns pink colour of phenophthalien in alkalies to colourless
how can acids act as electrolytes
they can do so due to the presence of ions. Hence they can conduct electricity
acid with strong oxidizing power
nitric acid
the acid which produces sugar charcoal form sugar
sulphuric acid
name a mineral acid
sulphuric acid
the acid which reacts with lead nitrate to form a white precipitate
concentrated sulphuric acid
acid formed on mixing with silver nitrate produces a white precipitate which is soluble in excess ammonium hydroxide
concentrated hydrochloric acid
the base which is not an alkali
copper hydroxide
