Acids Flashcards
Indigestion is caused by
An excess (too much) acid in the stomach
Why do you need hydrochloric acid in your stomach?
To kill bacteria and digest food
What do we call the tablets that we take to cure indigestion?
Antacids
What is an antacid?
A substance that contains a bases such as calcium carbonate that neutralises excess acid
How does an antacid work?
It neutralises excess stomach acid
What is the reaction that takes place between an acid and a base called?
Neutralisation
What products are made when and acid reacts with a base in a neutralisation reaction?
Salt and water
What is an alkali?
A base dissolved in water
Why do you find hazard symbols on bottles
To warn people of potential hazards/dangers
What gas do you always obtain (get) when you electrolyse an acid?
Hydrogen
What is electrolysis?
Decomposition (breaking down) a compound using electricity ( direct current)
What type of current is used in electrolysis?
D.C. = direct current
How do you test for hydrogen?
Place a lit splint in the gas. It will give a squeaky pop if hydrogen is present
How do you test for chlorine gas?
Damp blue litmus paper turns red and then bleaches white
How can you obtain chlorine gas from electrolysis?
Electrolyse either hydrochloric acid or sea water
State some uses of chlorine
Treat water supplies by killing microorganisms.
To make bleach and other cleaning products.
In the manufacture of PVC
What are the dangers in producing chlorine gas
It is a toxic gas
If you were making chlorine in the lab how do you prevent birthweight it in.
Keep room well ventilated
Wear a mask
How do you test for oxygen
Place a glowing splint in a test tube and it will relight
How can you produce both oxygen and hydrogen gas?
By the electrolysis of water using a direct current
State a use of hydrogen
Rocket fuel
State a use of oxygen
Breathing
