Acid Base Intro Flashcards
What is ECF?
interstitial fluid of peripheral tissues and plasma of circulating blood
What is ICF?
cytosol inside cells
How is water gained in the body?
absorption along the digestive tract
What does fluid shift mean?
A rapid water movement between ECF and ICF in response to an osmotic gradient
How does dehydration occur?
when water losses outpace water gains
What happens with continued fluid loss?
drop in blood pressure and blood volume
What is an Electrolyte?
ion released when mineral salts dissasociate
Where does absorption occur?
occurs across the epithelial lining of the small intestine and the colon
Where does excretion occur?
occurs primarily in the kidneys
What happens when salt gains exceed losses?
ECF volume increases
What happens when salt losses exceed gains?
ECF volumes decreases
When ECF volume is increased, what else happens?
blood volume and pressure are raised
What are the two sodium imbalance related conditions?
hyponatremia
hypernatremia
What is Hyponatremia and what is it caused by?
it is a low ECF salt concentration
caused by overhydration or inadequate salt intake
What is Hypernatremia and how is it caused?
high ECF salt conecntration
caused by dehydration
