Acid Base Balance Flashcards
Protein and phospholipid catabolism produce what?
Hydrogen
Carbon dioxide and water form what?
Carbonic Acid
(which is bicarbonate and hydrogen)
What is the normal pH range of blood?
7.35 - 7.45
What is the normal range of CO2?
35 - 45
What is the normal range of bicarb?
22 - 26
What does HPO4 accept in the tubule for excretion?
Hydrogen
How does ammonia work in the urine?
NH3 works as the urinary buffer and accepts a hydrogen.
Things that have a negative charge, but that we don’t have an explanation for or know where they came from (but we know how much they don’t match)
Anion Gap
What does it mean when the Anion Gap gets too high?
Metabolic Acidosis
(increased negative ions)
What kind of pathologies would result in lactic acidosis?
Heart Attacks
Strokes
Shock
Why are bicarbonate levels higher when you have acidosis?
Kidneys are reabsorbing more bicarbonate to try and offset what is happening in the lungs.
