Density of water
Water in its solid state is less dense than in its liquid state. As water is cooled its molecules slow down, lose kinetic energy and hydrogen bonding brings them closer together. As it begins to freeze it forms an open crystalline structure.
Surface tension of water
Water has a high surface tension due to the strong forces of attraction between water molecules at the surface.
Melting and boiling point of water
High melting and boiling points due to strong hydrogen bonding that must be overcome in order for it to change state from solid to liquid to gas.
Arrhenius Model
An acid ionises in water to produce H+ ions in solution
(HCl –> H+ + Cl-)
A base dissociates in water to produce OH- ions in a solution
(NaOH –> Na+ + OH-)
