What is the mechanism of action of antivirals?
They prevent viral DNA replication by competing with the natural substrates to be incorported into the viral DNA, stopping replication
What are the indications for aciclovir?
Herpes simplex infection
Post-exposure prophylaxis of varicella zoster
Treatment of varicella zoster
What are the contraindications for aciclovir?
Renal impairment and eldery (reduce dose)
Is aciclovir safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Not known to be harmful but manufacturer advises caution
What does aciclovir interact with?
Theophylline and aminophylline - aciclovir increases plasma concentration of these drugs
What are the common side effects of antivirals?
GI disturbance
Headache
What are the important side effects of antivirals?
Neurotoxicity
Acute renal failure
What is important to tell patients taking antivirals?
Stay adequately hydrated to help prevent neurotoxicity symptoms
Complete whole course of medication even if they start to feel better
