What are standardized tests?
commercially prepared tests for nationwide use designed to provide information about student’s performance compared to that of other students their age
What are standardized tests used for?
selection and placement (see p. 385), diagnosing student needs, evaluation and accountability, school improvement
What is an aptitude test?
a standardized test designed to measure student abilities and predict student future performance
What are achievement tests?
standardized tests designed to measure how much a student has learned
What are examples of aptitude tests?
IQ and SAT
What are examples of norm referenced achievement tests?
ACT, ITBS, diagnostic tests
What are examples of criterion referenced tests?
driving test
What is a raw score?
the number of correct questions obtained on a test
What are derived scores?
values calculated from raw scores that relate someone’s scores to those of a norming group
What are examples of derived scores?
percentiles, grade equivalent scores, etc
What does a percentile score mean?
the percentage of students in the norming group who scored lower than a particular score
What does a percentile score mean?
the percentage of students in the norming group who scored lower than a particular score
What does a grade equivalent score of 7.3 stand for?
7th grade 3rd month (November)
If a student scores 2 grade levels above tehir current grade, should they be accelerated (grade skipped)?
NO. This decision needs to be taken with a lot more information and based on classroom performance. A 4th grade test only tests 4th grade material, if someone scores above that it means they have great understanding of the topic but they have not been tests in other content of more advanced grades
