Accommodation Flashcards
What is accommodation?
The ability of the eye to increase dioptric power to get a clear image of a near object (closer = ciliary body contracts, zonules relax, lens thickens)
What is accommodation driven by?
Blur
Convergence
Proximal Cues
Tonic Convergence
What is the role of the lens?
Adjust focal length to focus image on retina
Whats the refractive media number for air, cornea, aqueous humour, lens and vitreous humour?
Air = 1.0
Cornea = 1.376
Lens = 1.42
Aqueous & Vitreous Humour = 1.336
How do we work out the power of a lens?
1 / focal length
What is power of lens the same as?
Accommodation as it’s the additional power of lens needed
What is the same as focal length?
Same as fixation distance
How do we work out accommodation (in dioptres)?
1 / fixation distance (meters)
If focal length of a lens is 2m, what’s its power?
1 / 2 = 0.5D
How do we work out focal length (in meters)?
1 / power of lens (accommodation)
What’s accommodation like in a 0-8wk old?
Sporadic, intermittent and inaccurate
What’s accommodation like in a 8-9wk old?
Adult-like
What’s accommodation like in a 3mo?
Fully developed
What’s presbyopia?
An age-related inability to accommodate that begins 40-45yo due to sclerosis of the crystalline lens
How do we calculate approximate accommodation expected for someone’s age?
4squared - (age/4)
