Define acceptance
Adopt liberal attitude towards opinons/acts of others (of other religions/ethnic backgrounds). All humans seen equal and willing to get to know people different than ourselves
Define intolerance
Insulting, name calling, inappropriate jokes, blaming, denigrating, harassing, attacking anyone who is different. Systemically rejecting group of people due to beliefs, backgrounds, languages, ideas. Refusing to see things from other POVs or respecting others’ freedoms
Define human rights
Inherent to all, no matter who they are/where they are from. Universal, inalienable, equal, interdependent, non-discriminatory.
Define human rights: universal
Duty of States to promote/protect all rights and fundamental freedoms, regardless of political, economic, cultural systems
Define human rights: inalienable
Shouldn’t be taken away except in specific situations and according to due process. Ex, right to liberty restricted to those found guilty of a crime
Define human rights: interdependent
Improvement of a right facilitating the advancement of others. Deprivation of one affects others.
Define human rights: equal and non-discriminatory
Principle applies to everyone, prohibits discrimination on basis of a list of non-exhaustive categories. Article 1 of Universal Declaration of HR: “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and in rights.”
Define intolerance: sexism
Policies, behaviours denying women/men participation in social life and enjoyment of HR based on assumption that one gender is superior.
Define intolerance: racism
Denial of HR based on race, due to beliefs that some racial groups are superior
Define intolerance: ethoncentrism
Exclusion on basis of culture or language, on assumption that cultures differ in terms of their value and status
Define intolerance: antisemitism
Attitudes. behaviours based on prejudice, discrimination, persecution against Jews
Define intolerance: chauvinistic nationalism (aggressive patriotism)
Belief that one nation is superior to and has rights over nations
Define intolerance: fascism
Belief that state should tolerate neither dissidence nor diversity, has power to control lives of its citizens
Define intolerance: xenophobia
Fear, aversion to foreigners; belief that outsiders are detrimental to society
